  1. Arthur Tatum Jr. was an American jazz pianist. Tatum grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where he began playing piano professionally and had his own radio program, rebr.
  2. The entire Art Tatum Masterpieces series is wonderful, but this release, with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster featured, is my favorite. Tatum's jangly, staccato piano solos combine with Webster's fluffy tenor to create an effect that to my taste is more than either musician gets alone/5(26).
  3. Sep 10,  · I have the Ben Webster/Art Tatum (vol 8) on LP (Analogue Productions' 45 rpm reissue of the Pablo), and it's excellent. Though it must be said that I do prefer Tatum solo. Webster-Tatum works b/c of Webster's reedy, fat tone which emphasizes laconic phrases. Tatum still goes nuts in the back with his pianistic wizardry.

  8. Art Tatum, Benny Carter, Louis Bellson: Tatum Group Masterpieces Vol 2 (LP, Vinyl record album)Brand: Pablo (Label).
  9. But the great alto saxophonist Benny Carter wasn't a weak player, and his sense of time and melody jibed with Tatum's. Vol. 1 of the Pablo Records group sessions is a triumph, as a result. Listen especially to the opening number, an improvised blues, Blues in C. Tatum /5(12).
